On the occasion of Vietnamese Women’s Day, Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam interviewed Alessandra Tognonato, Consul General of Italy in Ho Chi Minh City, about her diplomatic career, her views on women’s empowerment, and her first impressions of Vietnam.

Ms. Tognonato described Ho Chi Minh City as “a fast, energetic city with incredibly warm people”, expressing her enthusiasm for representing Italy in such a dynamic environment. With over two decades of experience in major capitals including Buenos Aires, Berlin, and Cairo, she affirmed that diplomacy remains her true vocation: “After twenty-four years, I still pursue the same passion I had as a young diplomacy student. Representing my country is the greatest privilege.”

Reflecting on women’s roles in diplomacy and beyond, she emphasized that “every individual, regardless of gender or identity, can contribute to society. What matters most is competence, diligence, and attitude.”

Concluding the interview, she shared a message of self-confidence and authenticity: “Every day is Sunday — give yourself the privilege of showing up as your best self.”
