To become a translator for stage performances you need artistic talent, similar to the one of actors.
This is the fundamental takeaway from the stimulating lesson “The Traitor on Stage” held by Prof. Stefano Romagnoli, expert in Japanese and Korean Languages and Literature Studies at La Sapienza University of Rome, last October 21 to students and teachers of the Department of Italian Studies of HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Prof. Romagnoli showcased the difficult balance between the literary loyalty to the authors of movies, theatre plays or TV series, and the need to bring the audience to a full and immediate understanding of the text. This balance becomes even more difficult when the two cultures are distant, as in the case of Italian translation of Japanese scripts.
“The Traitor on the Stage” workshop, which kicked-off the events of the Week of Italian Language in HCMC, has been particularly effective for its Vietnamese audience thanks to the density of concrete references and examples from “Games of Thrones” to the Japanese manga, in a stimulating and interactive atmosphere Prof. Romagnoli has been able to create.
